SSE Achieves Business Working Responsibly Mark Recertification for the Third Consecutive Time

05 Mar 2024

In 2017, SSE proudly became a recipient of the Business Working Responsibly Mark, administered by Business in the Community Ireland. Today, SSE is celebrating securing recertification of the Mark for the third consecutive time. This milestone holds extra significance as it is the first time the Mark will cover SSE operations in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The Mark is granted to companies that demonstrate a best-in-class commitment to sustainability. To attain recertification, SSE underwent a thorough audit conducted by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI). SSE was evaluated on its commitment to responsible value chain management, environmental sustainability and addressing the needs of key social stakeholders and wider society through decision-making structures.

Designed to foster a culture of continuous improvement, ongoing accountability, and leadership, the Business Working Responsibly Mark both compliments and reinforces, SSE’s approach to sustainability.

"Today marks a moment of pride for SSE employees across both parts of the island as we are recertified with the Business Working Responsibly Mark for an impressive third time. It underscores our unwavering dedication to prioritising the well-being of our customers, colleagues, and communities."

Klair Neenan, Director at SSE Airtricity

Klair continued:

"The Mark is recognition of all the great work we’ve done around sustainability to date, as well as an indication of our ambitions for the future. We are striving to be operationally net zero by 2050 and have set four 2030 business goals aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Mia Fahey McCarthy, Head of Sustainability, SSE Ireland commented:

“Sustainability is one of SSE’s core values, defined as ’we do the right thing for people and the planet’. As we approach our seventh year as a Mark-certified organisation, I am struck by the strides we have made in areas including employee wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, environmental practices, supply chain management, and engagement with the local community.”

Tomas Sercovich, CEO of Business in the Community Ireland said:

“We applaud SSE for attaining the Business Working Responsibly Mark for the third time. They showed leadership throughout the entire process demonstrating their dedication to all EESG aspects of sustainability. SSE’s commitment is evident in them being heavily involved in so many of our EESG initiatives such as our Low Carbon Pledge to decarbonise their operations, our Elevate Pledge to improve diversity and inclusion within their workforce and having some of their employees deliver a Student Mentoring Programme in DEIS schools.”
