SSE comments on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements consultation

18 Jul 2022

Commenting on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements consultation, Martin Pibworth, SSE’s Chief Commercial Officer said:

“SSE has highlighted for some time now that evolution of the current electricity market frameworks is needed to cost effectively deliver the levels of investment required to decarbonise the economy and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. Whilst SSE is yet to fully review today’s “Review of Electricity Markets Arrangements (REMA)” consultation document, an orderly consultative process is the right way to deliver long term investment efficiently.

"SSE will actively participate in the consultation process. Our starting point is that the current market arrangements have delivered significant investment into low carbon infrastructure, driving the costs of offshore wind down and protecting consumers against high prices, whilst keeping the lights on. However, evolution of these mechanisms will clearly be required to deliver the renewables-led power system needed to meet net zero affordably, backed up with the necessary flexibility to ensure secure supplies.”
