I'm proud to introduce SSE’s Sustainability Report 2026 and, for me personally, this is a particularly meaningful moment as my first Sustainability Report as Chief Sustainability Officer.
It comes at a time when the transition to a cleaner energy system is becoming ever more important, but also ever more complex. In that context, sustainability is not only about delivering against our climate ambitions, but about creating wider value for communities, customers, the economy and the energy system as a whole.
This report reflects the progress we are continuing to make in delivering the transition to a cleaner, more secure and more affordable energy system, and the important role SSE is playing in helping to make that happen.
From reducing the carbon intensity of the electricity we generate to investing in the networks and infrastructure needed for the future, we are taking practical steps that support both decarbonisation and long-term resilience.
But sustainability is about more than what we build. It is also about how we deliver it. The transition must work for people as well as the system itself, and that means supporting customers with affordable and reliable energy, investing in communities, and working with landowners, supply chain partners and other stakeholders in a way that is fair, inclusive and built for the long term.
Our approach is to embed sustainability into how we plan, finance, build and operate critical national infrastructure. It is not something separate from our business strategy, but fundamental to it. At the same time, we are clear that progress is not always linear. External dependencies, evolving policy frameworks and wider economic pressures continue to shape the pace and pathway of change. That is why it is important that we remain focused on making meaningful progress, while also being open about the challenges and trade-offs we must navigate along the way.
This year’s report sets out the action we are taking, the progress we are making, and the areas where we know we must continue to improve. It shows how sustainability underpins our strategy, helps us create lasting value, and builds the trust that is essential if we are to deliver the infrastructure needed at pace.
As we look ahead, we are under no illusion about the scale of the challenge, but also the opportunity. Our focus is on helping to deliver the transition in a way that works for people, for the energy system and for the wider economy, while creating lasting value and maintaining trust along the way.
