Our road to COP26

SSE Chief Executive Alistair Phillips-Davies writes why we must unite countries large and small in the fight to limit global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. As host, the UK has the opportunity to show the world how to deliver a green recovery; one that makes economic as well as environmental sense.

Scaling new global heights offshore

The shipping forecast made Dogger Bank a household name, but its renown as a weather region is about to be eclipsed as it becomes home to the world’s biggest offshore wind farm. Promising vast quantities of green energy and an array of green jobs.

Powering change

More renewables will need to come online to support the UK government’s targets of 40GW of offshore wind by 2030, and net zero by 2050. Just as important, is the required investment in the GB electricity networks to connect that green electricity to the grid and transport it to areas of demand.

Capturing the moment

We will need more than one solution to reach net zero. Carbon capture and hydrogen technologies have huge potential to decarbonise flexible power generation and other hard to reach sectors. SSE’s projects at Keadby in the Humber could become the UK’s first CCS-equipped power stations before 2030 with Peterhead in Aberdeenshire also making the switch.

Come rain, come shine

Pumped hydro storage technology allows the UK to make the most of its unpredictable weather. SSE Renewables planned 1,500MW capacity and 30GWh storage Coire Glas pumped hydro project in the Scottish Highlands could become the UK’s largest and the first such scheme delivered for decades - more than doubling the UK’s pumped hydro storage.
