Statement on CCC 6th Carbon Budget

09 Dec 2020

We welcome today’s ambitious CCC 6th Carbon Budget which sets out clearly how a zero carbon electricity system can be the catalyst for the decarbonisation of the whole economy.

Low cost renewables will form the backbone of the UK’s switch to net zero and have shown that the cost of tackling climate change is cheaper than anyone could have predicted five or ten years ago.

However, the road to net zero must be a just one, and the benefits of carbon capture and storage can not only underpin the enormous scale of renewable energy, which will be required, but support communities and jobs in the regions which need it the most.

SSE is ready to act at pace, not least in developing a clean power hub in the Humber region, with Keadby 3 as the UK’s first gas-fired power station equipped with CCS, enabling the technology to be applied wider in the future, and helping drive a clean industrial revolution across the UK.
