SSE is delighted to announce the start of an exciting new partnership with Teach First which will see the two organisations join forces to raise the aspirations of girls in low-income communities across England.
Over the next 12 months, SSE and Teach First will work together on two strands of activity to help girls reach their full potential in the areas of sport and science.
As the flagship partner for Women in STEM, senior SSE employees will go into classrooms to show pupils the opportunities available to all in the energy sector. They will also take part in a workplace programme allowing pupils to visit SSE sites for a behind the scenes look at the different career paths open to them.
SSE is also using its sponsorship of The SSE Women's FA Cup to encourage girls from low-income communities to get involved with grassroots football projects and provide inspirational role models at partner schools.
Girls the length of the country will be given a number of opportunities to be involved in The SSE Women’s FA Cup from helping with the draws for the cup to hearing inspirational talks from female footballers in the classroom. This is a unique opportunity for pupils from low-income backgrounds to engage in a national sporting event.
Commenting on the announcement during this year’s Girls' Football Week, Rosie MacRae, SSE’s Head of Diversity & Inclusion said:
“SSE is excited to be working with Teach First and can’t wait to get started. Teach First has a strong history of helping to build classroom leaders and SSE can help take that to the next level with the Women in STEM work we’ll be doing as part of this partnership.
“As a responsible company SSE sees working with Teach First as an opportunity to invest in a cultural change both for SSE and wider society.”
Brett Wigdortz OBE, Founder and CEO of Teach First added:
"This is an exciting new partnership for Teach First and we are grateful for the support that SSE will provide. Working together, we can make a real difference to the aspirations, wellbeing and resilience of our pupils with the many activities we have in store across the year.”
Teach First is an organisation working towards ending educational inequality. It works in partnerships with schools, universities, charities, businesses and individuals who share the vision that no child's success is limited by their background.
