As our latest cohort of apprentices take to the tools we spoke to two former trainees that are now qualified and working with SSE.
Katy Fraser and Morna Grant both started with the company as apprentices and are now onshore wind technicians working on some of our 475 turbines.
Katy found the mixture of college and on the job training really useful in learning her trade and believes the SSE apprenticeship scheme allows more opportunities to those who grow up in rural areas.
She said: “I was following the recruitment process on twitter before eventually applying online. We got a good mixture of training in college as well as on the job training. I think the company benefits from having younger minds with fresh eyes.
“I also think schemes like this one are important to those who grow up in rural communities; it allows us to gain skills we can use in our local area.”
In this short video she talks about the experience she’s gained so far.
Morna Grant said the quality of training offered by SSE was the main draw for her when applying to the programme as well as the company’s approach to diversity. She said: “The energy sector is fast paced and really important so I wanted to be part of it. I’d also heard SSE was big on diversity and I wanted to start with a company that would treat me like any other apprentice.”
In this short video she takes some time to tell us why the SSE apprenticeship scheme was worth applying for.
