SSE Chief Executive Alistair Phillips-Davies last night participated in a lively debate on the role of a good corporation.

The event took place in Edinburgh following the launch yesterday of SSE’s Changing Lives, Growing Value report, which outlines the business case for investing in young people and providing employment opportunities.

Alistair was joined by event chair Merryn Somerset Webb, Editor-in-Chief of Moneyweek magazine and Colin Temple, Managing Director of schuh, alongside representatives of the Scottish business and financial communities.

During the speech he made ahead of the debate, Alistair said: “The nature of our product – providing people with something they need, not simply something that they want – places an additional level of expectation on us.

“As a privatised industry we must always pay due regard to our special status. We are a creature of statute and with that, we think, there are greater obligations and higher standards by which we should abide. In particular, if you pardon the pun, we should use our power for good.”

Last night’s event was the second in a series of debates which look at how companies do the right thing by society and as well as their customers and shareholders.
