To mark the start of National Apprenticeship week we asked, Laura Morris, one of our recent recruits what it’s like to work for SSE as an apprentice.
Why did you pick SSE?
I always strive to be at the top of my game in everything I do, so I decided SSE was the company I wanted to work for given its excellent reputation in the contracting world. In addition, SSE's core values and five golden rules further encouraged me to apply.
Through personal experience with SSE I have always felt its level of customer service and emphasis on safety was exceptional, which was another key factor in leading me to apply for the position.
What do you do for SSE?
The apprenticeship consists of practical on the job experience and blocks studying at Southampton City College. So I far, I have worked as part of the SSE contracting team on a wide variety of mechanical projects across the country ranging from large commercial office refurbishments to smaller scale installs and maintenance. My role is very much hands on, such as the prefabrication of pipework, the preparation of materials to assist the supervisor or crafts person and day to day on site responsibilities such as signing work permits and ensuring the site is tidy and free from hazards. My time at college is an even mixture of practical learning in the workshop and classroom based theory.
How did you get where you are?
Having completed a university degree, worked in a number of different jobs and travelled the world, it has taken me a few more years than some to discover my passion, but what sparked my interest in wanting to learn a trade was the process of renovating my property. After completing plumbing tasks throughout the house I wanted to broaden my knowledge and enrolled onto a short course in domestic plumbing. Following that, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the industry and after looking in to apprenticeships, I decided the learning program SSE was offering was the one for me.
Why are you proud to be working for SSE?
The consistent high standard of work and customer service SSE provides makes me proud to wear the logo. A great working ethic and strong team bond make turning up to work each day a positive and motivating experience. The fact that the company is spread throughout the whole of the UK and is continuing to grow speaks for itself in terms of its success and reputation, I wouldn't choose to work for anyone else.
