Fiddler’s Ferry charity golf day raises £33,000

13 Nov 2015

Keen golfers from SSE’s Fiddler’s Ferry power station have once again raised a staggering amount of money to help out deserving local charities.

The 15th annual charity golf event was attended by staff and contractors at the station and will now see four local organisations benefitting, enabling them to deliver more of the vital services they offer.

The following charities were chosen as beneficiaries this year:

  • Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice
  • St Rocco’s Hospice
  • Halton Haven Hospice
  • Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Rheumatology Department

Eleanor Smith, community fundraiser for Halton Haven, said: “This donation will allow us to fund a nurse for five months. In that time they will look after 80 patients and their families which, at an average of eight family members, means that this gift will touch the lives of 720 people in Halton – a huge achievement.”

Halton Haven’s Chief Executive, Shaun Pollard, added: “We are delighted to have been supported once again by Fiddler’s Ferry and cannot express our gratitude enough for the donation received from their annual charity golf day. We are only able to continue offering the services that we do due to the amazing support shown by local businesses within the community of Halton, such as Fiddler’s Ferry. On behalf of all the patients at the hospice we would like to thank them very much for choosing to fundraise for us again this year.”

The big match, hosted at Blundells Hill Golf Club in Rainhill, brought together 120 Fiddler’s Ferry employees and contractors with the aim of raising as much money as possible for the nominated charities. A celebration event following the match, hosted by local comedian Willie Miller, included a charity auction and raffle.

Helen Latham, from St Rocco’s Hospice, explained exactly how the donation would be used to support the patients. She said: “Our clinical lead, Alison White, is ecstatic that she now has the opportunity to purchase a syringe driver and a high/ low bed.  We are so grateful to Fiddler’s Ferry for once again choosing to support St Rocco’s Hospice with their annual golf day.  This incredible donation is just one of many ways the team from SSE support St Rocco’s each year -  their generosity never ceases to amaze us.”

Carol Kirkham, fundraising manager for Zoe’s Place, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the baby hospice and explained that the donation would be used to develop a range of therapies using art and music . This helps develop communication and interaction skills, allowing the children to find new ways to express their feelings creatively and constructively.

The final beneficiary from the day, Alder Hay Children’s Hospital, will use the donation to help support the Rheumatology Unit, where they care for patients with severe chronic inflammatory conditions. Some are life-long and can have an enormous impact on the child, as well as the wider family.
