Tonight (Friday 20 November) sees national sports equality charity Scottish Women in Sport host its annual awards dinner at Hampden Park.

The second annual dinner held in partnership with SSE will celebrate and recognise the success of Scotland’s female stars for their achievements during 2015 and crown the SSE Champion of 2015.

The cream of Scotland’s professional sportswomen will be in attendance and speakers will include Paralympic runner and SSE Next Generation Ambassador Libby Clegg as well as golfers Kylie Walker of the European Ladies Tour (and SSE Next Generation Ambassador) and Belle Robertson MBE.

Guests will include Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health Jamie Hepburn who will be joined by an array of top female athletes including middle distance runner Laura Muir, Scottish wheelchair racer Sammi Kinghorn, deaf swimmer Dannielle Joyce and parasport sprint champion Maria Lyle.

Eight awards will seek to highlight and promote Scotland’s women in sport:

  • SSE 2015 SWiS Champion
  • RBS 2015 Sportswomen of the Year
  • Sportscotland 2015 Young Sportswomen of the Year
  • Purple TV 2015 Best Team Performance
  • McCrea Financial Services 2015 Coach of the Year
  • Altiumi10 2015 Best Newcomer
  • The National 2015 Official of the Year
  • Winning Scotland Foundation 2015 Role Model of the Year

SWiS founder Maureen McGonigle said: “We were absolutely delighted by the number of nominations received this year. Taking these nominations down to a short-list of four for each category was extremely challenging, however it shows the interest and captures the passion that is out there for women in sport.

“This is a gala occasion, a glamour night for everyone who supports women in sport. It’s a night of celebration where we can all enjoy looking back at the successes of 2015 and look forward to 2016 where we know women in sport will continue to challenge and make the headlines and create further success on the worlds sporting arena.”

James Docherty, Senior Sponsorship Manager, at SSE said: “We are proud to be once again sponsoring the annual Scottish Women in Sport Awards for the second year running.

“SSE sponsoring events like this sends a very strong signal to our employees, stakeholders, customers and investors that we are serious about supporting females in sport. As a diverse organisation with responsibilities in supporting our employees and communities, we are delighted to play our part in helping women and girls participate and get involved at all levels of sport across Scotland.”
