Employees at SSE’s UK and Ireland onshore wind team have been putting their best foot forward to raise money for the UK’s leading men’s health charity, Prostate Cancer UK, and Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice in Ireland.

The teams from UK and Ireland competed against each other in a charity football match as part of the company’s health and wellbeing drive. The match took place at McDiarimid Park, home of St Johnstone Football Club, and raised over £3,000 to be split between the two worthwhile causes.

After putting their energy to good use the UK team, managed by Stuart Hood, proved to be the one with the wind in their sails resulting in a 6-2 victory. Marc McLaughlin’s Irish side were however able to draw consolation from the sum raised for two fantastic causes. The winners were presented with a cup by Martin Pibworth, SSE Managing Director, Wholesale.

Jerry Williamson, Head of Onshore Wind, oversaw the event and chose Prostate Cancer UK as one of the recipients because it has such an impact to both men and women and is a cause particularly close to Jerry, who’s late father died of the disease. He said: “We are delighted to give such a substantial amount to such worthwhile charities.

“The game was a great success so we’ll be repeating it next year. In the meantime we’ve invited Prostate Cancer UK along to give presentations to the business to raise awareness further.”

Emma McGowan, Fundraising Executive for Scotland at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to all employees at SSE who played a part in raising money and awareness for the most common cancer in men. Prostate Cancer UK is determined to one day beat the disease completely, which is why we’re so grateful to all those who took part, and their supporters, who have gone to such lengths to help us do just that.

“They have joined the ranks of our Men United movement which is helping to make a real difference in furthering the fight against prostate cancer by doing something great with their friends – and we urge others to do the same. Whatever you do together, big or small, by joining our movement for men you’ll be helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments.”
