A team of volunteers from Fiddler’s Ferry power station have saved the day for the Children’s Society Family Centre in Longford, following a spate of vandalism in the centre’s garden.

The damage done threatened to scupper plans for a special weekend of family fun organised by dedicated staff at the popular local community centre.

A call for help was immediately put out and an SSE ‘Be the Difference’ volunteer squad was quickly assembled from employees on site at Fiddler’s Ferry.

The team rallied round to roll up their sleeves and spend a day ensuring the centre’s gardens were safe, secure and looking immaculate for the colourful family fun day staff and guests had been looking forward to for weeks. Happily, there was even time to turn and compost the plant boxes.

SSE’s Paul Cockcroft who works at the power station commented:
"All SSE employees can take a day away from their normal duties each year to help a project in their local community, so the crisis faced by the Children’s Society Family Centre in Longford was something we could turn from a negative into a positive through people power and a team effort.

"Any local group or charity can effectively ‘borrow’ a team of SSE hands, minds, ideas or skills completely free of charge.

"This worked out well for the Children’s Society Centre in Longford and allowed a much-anticipated family day to avoid last minute cancellation and instead go ahead on schedule, with everyone having a wonderful time."
