The 3rd annual SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon is set for Sunday 31st May 2015 with around 2000 runners expected to line up for the challenging 26.2 miles trip around both sides of the river Foyle, and a spectacular finish at Derry's historic Guildhall Square and the famous City Walls.
The inaugural SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon was one of the highlights of the City of Culture celebrations in 2013, and since then., the event has captured the imagination of the locals and developed a much wider National and International profile as a "must do " marathon.
It has been wholeheartedly embraced by the local community who turn out in huge numbers to support the runners and the riverside course also embraces and showcases the contours of a historic city with the iconic Peace Bridge, the Ebrington Site, Free Derry Corner and the climb up Fahan Steet into the Walled City itself all on the route.
The SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon is the real thing, organised by runners for runners, an experience to be savoured and well worth a weekend trip to the North West!
In both 2013 and 2014 entries closed very early and 2015 promises to be more of the same and the message from Race Director Noel McMonagle is quite simple.
“Don’t miss the Bus!! Online entry is available now at www.thewalledcitymarathon.com,entries are already rolling in and we have a 2000 entry quota with the door closing once that figure is reached.
"Please take the first step now, sign up online immediately to avoid disappointment and we look forward to seeing you all on the line come Sunday 31st May next year! "
Jillian Saunders, SSE Airtricity Brand and Sponsorship Manager, commented:
“At SSE Airtricity, we’re proud to make a difference throughout the communities that we operate and the whole team at SSE Airtricity are delighted to be returning to Derry~Londonderry for the third year in succession. With almost 4,000 runners taking in the stunning views along the River Foyle and around the famous city walls, the SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon has developed into one of the highlights of Northern Ireland’s athletics calendar, and an event that both runners and communities alike look forward to all year round.”
Derry City Council were also significantly involved in the success of the past two years and support from the new Derry and Strabane District Council should add to the quality of the 2015 event once again.
