The SSE Hydro’s first birthday was recently recognised by a number of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament.
The purpose built arena in Glasgow’s city centre was opened a year ago with Rod Stewart performing on its opening night. Since then it has welcomed the world’s biggest music stars and events as well as playing a pivotal role in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Anne McTaggart MSP lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament stating: "The Parliament welcomes the recent celebrations to mark the first anniversary of the opening of the SSE Hydro arena in Glasgow; understands that the arena has so far hosted 147 events, including the Ryder Cup concert and the MOBO Awards and has welcomed 1.5 million visitors; believes that its opening has marked the start of a major drive to turn Glasgow into one the world’s main entertainment stopovers for global superstars; understands that there is a host of upcoming prestigious events, including the MTV Europe Music Awards on 7 November 2014, which has a potential global reach of more than 700 million viewers, and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards; believes that such events will inject a whopping £10 million into the city’s economy; wishes everyone at the SSE Hydro continued success; believes that it is at forefront as one of the world’s top venues, and hopes that it will remain so.”
