Despite only just celebrating its first birthday today, The SSE Hydro has already become one of the world’s most iconic venues – hosting over 100 performances in the first year alone.

The purpose built arena in Glasgow’s city centre opened a year ago today with music legend Rod Stewart setting the scene for the type of year The SSE Hydro had in store. Since then it has welcomed almost 1 million guests, including 17,000 SSE customers who have taken advantage of our 48 hour pre-sale tickets.

As well as welcoming the world’s biggest music stars it also played a pivotal role in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games hosting the netball, gymnastics and boxing events.

Since it opened The SSE Hydro has won countless awards and earlier this year was placed third in the Pollstar "Top 100 Worldwide Arena Venues," beating some of the world's most known venues including Madison Square Garden in New York.

Wendy Barbour, SSE Director for Commonwealth Games and Sponsorship, said: “Since opening in September last year The SSE Hydro has hosted the world’s biggest stars and has received countless awards and plaudits.

“From Rod Stewart to Beyonce, it’s become one of the top entertainment venues in the world and in the summer it played host to a number of Commonwealth Games events and proved to be a popular backdrop for a number of international broadcasters.

“It has been a fantastic first year for The SSE Hydro and with many more international stars and events already lined up for its second year, including the MTV Europe Music Awards, I’m sure things are only going to go from strength to strength."

SSE is the title sponsor of the 13,000 capacity auditorium, which enables SSE to offer customers advanced access to tickets as well as the chance to upgrade into exclusive customer lounges at the venue.
