Glamorgan Cricket has confirmed that the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff will host the First Investec Ashes Test Match of the 2015 Series, starting on Wednesday 8th July.
The England & Wales Cricket Board recently confirmed the full international programme for the summer of 2015 with tours by New Zealand and Australia.
Cardiff’s SWALEC Stadium will host the opening Investec Ashes Test Match of the five-match series, as it did in 2009 when England’s last pair of James Anderson and Monty Panesar mounted a famous rearguard action which saw England draw a gripping Ashes encounter.
England and Australia will also do battle in a NatWest T20 fixture at the Cardiff venue on Monday 31st August 2015.
Glamorgan Cricket Chief Executive Hugh Morris said: “Glamorgan County Cricket Club is delighted to be hosting the opening Investec Ashes Test which promises to be an exciting and hugely anticipated contest, as one the world’s most renowned sporting rivalries resumes in Cardiff.”
Rt Hon Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, added: “This is fantastic news for Wales. We proved the critics wrong when we hosted the opening Test Match here in 2009 and are becoming renowned for our ability to successfully stage some of the highest profile events in the world.”
SWALEC also supports Welsh cricket through its £10,000 Community Development Fund which was first introduced in 2011, in conjunction with Cricket Wales and Glamorgan Cricket.
It provides matched funding for grassroots cricket clubs to support one of Wales’ most popular sports at a local level.
