SSE Ambassador Eilidh Child won a silver medal - and the hearts of a nation - in the 400m hurdles last night.

The Team Scotland captain, who stars in SSE's Glasgow 2014 advertising campaign, was never likely to beat world number one, Jamaica's Kaliese Spencer.

But she ran a strong race in wet conditions to claim a silver medal.

Eilidh told BBC News this morning: "Being the poster girl did add a bit of pressure.

"But when the race started I forgot all about that and it all just came together."

Eilidh's silver medal was followed by emotional scenes at Hampden Park as the 40,000-strong crowd sang The Proclaimer's 500 Miles to celebrate.

She added: "The reaction of the crowd was lovely. It gave you a bit of extra Adrenalin.

"It's just so amazing, I have so many different emotions - relief, happiness."

Eilidh will sit out the heats of the 4x400m hurdles relay today but will compete again if Scotland qualify for the final.
