A team of IT specialists from SSE swapped their keyboards for paintbrushes to help add a splash of colour to a nursery school playground in Caversham.

15 employees from the energy company’s Reading office spent two days transforming a tired play area at New Bridge Nursery School into a rainbow of colour by painting wooden furniture, including benches, sheds and fences.

This is the third year the IT team has helped out at the nursery which is made possible through the company’s Community at Heart scheme – which gives every employee a day away from their normal work duties to help out on a project in their local community.

SSE’s Steve Wilkinson, who has organised the team’s assistance since 2012, said: “We have gained a lot of enjoyment from helping the nursery over the years. We’ve renovated meeting and computer rooms, laid concrete paths and on our most recent visit painted furniture in their grounds and play area.

“It’s certainly hard work and very different to our normal day job but it’s great to see the difference we have made following a visit. The nice weather made it an even better experience for us as we were able to enjoy some sunshine whilst using a lot of elbow grease to get the work completed.”
