Volunteers took time out of their busy working lives to help support The Rowans Hospice annual fundraising ‘Moonlit Memories Walk’ in Hampshire.
A mix of forty-three Southern Electric employees from Customer Service, IT and contracting worked throughout the night as marshals and at water stations around the 12 mile course which attracts more than 1,000 participants from the age of 13 upwards each year.
Amy Bolton, a customer service adviser based at SSE’s Penner Road office and who volunteered at the event said:
“The Moonlit Memories Walk is a scenic circular route around the Historic Dockyard and past HMS Victory which looks spectacular lit-up at night.
“Having the opportunity through SSE to help with these events and give something back to our local community is very rewarding and we look forward to continuing our support to The Rowans Hospice at future fundraising events.”
The Rowans Hospice is a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Since 1994, they have helped more than 7,000 patients and families across Portsmouth and South East Hampshire.
It receives approximately 17% of its funding from the Government and needs to raise around £4million each year from people in the community, individuals, businesses and organisations to provide its vital services.
The Moonlit Memories Walk is the biggest fundraising event in the hospice's calendar which this year is set to raise £120,000 towards hospice care in the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire area.
Hannah Wilding, Events Fundraiser at The Rowans Hospice said, "The Moonlit Memories Walk is not only a fantastic opportunity for the local community to be part of the hospice’s biggest event, but it is also a poignant way to remember a family member or close friend."
Since the launch of Community at Heart in 2009, SSE employees have dedicated over 24,000 days (the equivalent of 194,000 hours) to thousands of deserving projects right across Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
