The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games begins on Wednesday 23rd July and five members of staff from SSE’s Ireland business are swapping their suits and shirts for runners and tracksuits as they prepare to lend a helping hand at this summer’s games.

SSE, who are a major sponsor of the Glasgow 2014 games and of the four Home Nations teams including Northern Ireland have given employees from across the business the opportunity to get involved in the spirit of the games. Fiona Hannon and Ashley Scott (pictured left and right) along with Donal Gormley, Aidan McGinn and Justin Boyle will be joining volunteers from all corners of the world, as they lend a helping hand across a variety of sports and events over the next two weeks.

Ashley, who is originally from Glasgow before moving to Dublin to work with SSE Airtricity, commented; “The excitement is really building, we’ve all known for quite some time that we’d be helping out, and now it’s almost here. I’m originally from Glasgow, so it’s great to see so much positive energy and such a vibrant atmosphere around the city, and I’m sure all the volunteers coming over from Belfast and Dublin will have a really exciting few weeks.”

The opening ceremony for the Glasgow 2014 games will take place on Wednesday evening, following the arrival of the Queens Baton, which will have visited over 70 nations, travelling more than 190,000km over a period of 288 days.

SSE Ireland employee, Josh Bradley, joins the baton celebrations on Monday as it travels on its final few legs through Glasgow City Centre.  On carrying the baton for SSE, Josh commented; “It’s a once in a life time opportunity and a real privilege to not only be involved in the Glasgow 2014 Games, but to carry the Queens Baton through the streets of Glasgow is an experience that I will never forget.”

An athlete many of the staff from Northern Ireland will have their eye on will be Belfast boxer, Michael Conlan, who is one of the Team NI home nation ambassadors supported by SSE, and Michael recently said that anything short of gold in Glasgow will represent, “failure”.

You can get behind your home nation and show your support by tweeting #GoNI, #GoScotland, #GoEngland or #GoWales and spur your ambassador on to glory in Glasgow
