The members of Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club (DMYC) basked in the sailor’s favourite combination of sunshine and fair winds for the club’s recent Regatta. The event, a highlight in the town’s sailing calendar, was sponsored by SSE Airtricity whose Ireland corporate headquarters is located nearby.

A total of 120 boats covering 29 different classes competed, bedecking Dublin Bay in colour and spectacle with over 700 sailors, race officials in support and safety boats. The sailors, ranging in ages from teens to over-70s, crewed boats from 14ft to 50ft and with each sailor vying for blue ribbon honours.

The DMYC is one of the most famous motor yacht clubs in Ireland. The club caters for anybody who wants to ‘get on the water’ to cruise, sail, race, scuba dive, stand-up-paddle, kayak, fish or simply enjoy the natural beauty of Dublin Bay and beyond.

After a full day’s racing sailors and guests alike took to the sun-kissed deck of the DMYC for the official Regatta prize-giving. The Commodore of Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club Kevin Burke was joined by the Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr Marie Baker, and by Jennifer Geraghty from SSE’s Offshore Wind division to present the accolades to the winning sailors. Also attending were the Commodores of the neighbouring sailing and yacht clubs in Dun Laoghaire harbour as well as the Commodore from Poolbeg Yacht Club up the Bay.

The prize-giving included a special musical performance by The Airs, SSE Airtricity’s own workplace choir, along with entertainment by renowned classical guitarist Pat Codrick.

“This year’s Regatta was a great day, and the sponsorship from SSE Airtricity really helped make the DMYC Regatta a great success. The Airs were a fantastic addition to the celebrations – and we’ll be delighted to welcome them back to our club anytime, especially next year when we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Regatta,” Commodore Burke said.
