SSE employees got handy with their brushes when they were asked to volunteer at a nursery in Perth.

Nine members of SSE’s Customer Relations department took time away from their normal working day and showed off their painting skills in order to help brighten up The Wendy House Nursery’s garden fences.

The Wendy House provides high quality care and education to children aged 0-5 years and puts the children’s needs firmly at the centre of the nursery’s whole service.

Catriona Davie, Manager at The Wendy House Nursery, said: “We were delighted to secure this help from SSE to paint all the nursery fences, sheds and trellis and transport three tons of fresh play sand into the sand pit. Everyone worked so hard and the children, staff and I were delighted with the results.  It’s really freshened up the children’s outdoor play space.”

Tracy Wales, a Customer Relations Manager who helped out on the day, added: “We wanted to help out The Wendy House as the nursery provides a service for many SSE employees. As well as give the fences a facelift there was some clearance work required which tested our strength when lifting broken slabs and left over mud and grit.

“Everyone enjoyed the experience of getting out of the office and giving something back to our local community. Some of our colleagues are even going back to finish a job that couldn’t be completed due to the rain - typical Scottish weather!”

Community at Heart is SSE’s employee volunteering scheme which lets every staff member take a day’s paid leave to lend a hand at a project in their local community.

Since the scheme’s launch in 2009, SSE employees have dedicated over 24,000 days (the equivalent of 194,000 hours) to thousands of deserving projects right across Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
