SWALEC has been working with Housing Association, Merthyr Valley Homes, in Wales to install external wall insulation to 87 properties in Merthyr Tydfil.

The British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) semi detached and terraced houses are around 65 years old and have deteriorated over the years, suffered corrosion and are poorly insulated.

Around 68 properties in phase 1 of the project have already been completed and work has commenced on the remaining 19 properties in phase 2.

SWALEC provided top-up funding to Merthyr Valley Homes of around £200K towards the project through the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. SWALEC can provide a range of blended and top-up funding for housing associations and councils to help their homes become energy efficient.

The new external wall insulation has provided Merthyr Valley Homes with a new look as well as a more energy efficient property that will help them stay warmer for longer and could reduce fuel bills by around £270* per year. Each insulated property will save just short of 25 tonnes of C02 over the lifetime of the insulation and extended the life of the buildings for years to come.
