Thirty primary and secondary schools from across Northern Ireland have been selected to attend the 2014 SSE Airtricity & Eco-Schools Global Wind Awards, due to be held at SSE Airtricity’s Slieve Kirk Wind Farm in County Derry~Londonderry on Thursday 12th June.
Over 150 students and teachers from primary and secondary schools across Northern Ireland will take part in the second energy focused awards, which will be a highlight of this year’s Global Wind Month, the annual celebration of wind power and renewable energy.
This year’s Global Wind Awards drew more than 60 entries from Primary and Secondary schools competing for the title of Eco-Schools Committee of the year and Operation Energy school project of the year.
Josh Bradley, SSE Airtricity, said: ‘The competition drew a number of outstanding entries from primary, secondary and special schools across Northern Ireland, giving the judges a very difficult task in selecting the shortlist. We’d like to congratulate every school who submitted an entry.”
Carmel Fyfe, Eco-Schools Manager, said: ‘It is wonderful to see such interest from schools across the province and congratulations to all the shortlisted schools. The Global Wind Awards will certainly be a special occasion to reward these efforts while helping our young people to learn more about wind power in a fun and hands-on way.'
In addition to a special guided tour of SSE Airtricity’s Slieve Kirk Wind Farm, the local energy experts will have the opportunity to engage with some of Northern Ireland’s leading energy groups such as SSE Renewables and W5 who will both be exhibiting on the day.
Eco-Schools will have the opportunity to pit their wits against a specialist panel made up of energy experts from the political and business world, quizzing them on everything from the future role of renewables in Northern Ireland’s energy mix to the most effective measures to help reduce energy bills both at home and at school.
