The SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon has been hailed as a huge success, as record crowds turned out to this year’s SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon to watch Kenyan, Freddy Keron Sittuk and Anne Curley win two dramatic elite races in perfect marathon conditions.

Deputy First Minister and Derry~Londonderry local, Martin McGuiness set more than 1,500 runners on their way from the Everglades Hotel on Sunday morning after over 2000 had registered to run by close of play on Saturday. All runners had crossed the finish line in the Guildhall Square by 3pm on Sunday, after passing more than 10,000 spectators along the route.

The marathon, which was the second following the inaugural SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon last year, followed a route that took runners along both sides of the River Foyle and through the city centre, to a finish at the famous Guildhall Square.

Marathon organiser Noel McMonagle said: “While the walled city has so many beautiful buildings, historic sites and views to take in, the fast pace set by so many of the runners suggests their competitive spirit didn’t let they stop for a lingering look.

“Marathon’s are about endurance and stamina, and we have to give a huge congratulations to all those who participated, be it as serious runners, for charitable causes or in relays. It takes a huge commitment to prepare to take on a circuit like this, and with such wonderful surroundings and entertainment along the route I’m sure it was a hugely enjoyable experience.”

Speaking at the finishing line, Jillian Saunders, SSE Airtricity Marketing Manager and main sponsor for the event, said:

“SSE Airtricity are once again hugely proud to be involved in such a successful event today, to show our commitment to supporting the communities that we operate it and events that show the very best of the local community. All those involved, from runners and stewards to entertainers and volunteers, created a carnival atmosphere, and it is a credit to all those involved in the organisation of this event.

“Congratulations in particular should go to the winners, Freddie Sittuk and Anne Curley. SSE Airtricity would like to congratulate all those who took part, hoping that none of them ‘hit the wall’ and we look forward to seeing them, and more, next year.”
