This year, SSE is celebrating five years of its employee volunteering scheme, Community at Heart, and is on the look out for local community groups, schools, charities and organisations that are in need of a helping hand.
Community at Heart enables every one of its employees to take a day’s paid leave from their normal work duties to offer practical support to organisations and projects that matter in their local community.
Since the scheme’s launch in 2009, SSE employees have dedicated over 24,000 days (equivalent to 194,000 hours) to over 2,100 projects across the UK and Ireland.
Projects have included restoring paths at the historic Hilsea Lines in Portsmouth, painting cartoon characters on the walls at a family support centre in Dundee, made repairs to an arts centre in County Donegal and helped organise a Christmas party for a school in Cardiff.
Community Action Advisor at SSE, Cindy Cummings, is keen to hear from projects that can benefit from the company’s help.
She said: “Community at Heart is an important way for our employees to help make a difference to projects they care about in their local community. The scheme has been a tremendous success and our employees gain lots of enjoyment from it too.”
“We’re keen to hear from any project or organisation that would like a helping hand to get in touch. It doesn’t matter how big or small, it could be labour-intensive such as painting and gardening or more administrative in nature. What matters is that it makes a difference to the people who use it.”
