4,000 runners set to take part in the SSE Airtricity Dublin Race Series Five Mile Race this weekend
26 Jun 2014The SSE Airtricity Dublin Race Series will kick off its 13th year this Saturday, June 28th with the Irish Runner Five Mile Race in the Phoenix Park. Almost 4,000 runners will line up at the start of the first race in the four part Dublin Race Series.
The five mile park route attracts runners of all levels of ability while also boasting a strong elite field. Top of the ladies contending this Saturday is Nicola Duncan who has been selected to run for Ireland in the European championships in Zurich. Nicola will be closely followed by top Irish marathon lady at present, Ailish Malone and also Breedge Connolly from North Belfast.
In the men’s event, current SSE Airtricity Dublin marathon winner, Sean Hehir will compete on Saturday and will be chased around the five mile course by other Irish elites, Paddy Hammilton and Michael McDiarmada.
Maria McCambridge, 2013 SSE Airtricity Five mile race winner offered up some survival tips ahead of this weekend’s five mile race; “It’s important to prepare for all types of weather on the day, get plenty of rest and sleep before the race. You should have your schedule worked out so that you arrive in time to take part and I recommend that you have your running gear worked out making sure that you don't wear new runners on the day and probably most importantly you enjoy the experience!”
Commenting on this year’s five mile race, Jim Aughney, SSE Airtricity Dublin marathon race director said:, "The popular Dublin Race Series, now in its thirteenth year is a great way for runners to enjoy a well organised event in the picturesque Phoenix Park and also for marathon hopefuls to prepare for the 2014 marathon event in October. There is a healthy level of entries for the five mile race this year so we can definitely expect a strong field for the entire series ahead.”
Race organisers are reminding entrants that there will be road closures in place from early morning in the Phoenix Park, so entrants are advised to allow additional time to get there ahead of the race start at 10am sharp. A shuttle bus will operate from Parkgate Street from 8.30-9.30 and will return after the race.
