The SSE Hydro in Glasgow will host BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year this December.

The star-studded event which attracts sporting stars and celebrities from across the globe  will take place at the 12,500 capacity arena and is also to be shown live on BBC One.

With Glasgow gearing up for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the addition of this event gives a perfect opportunity to bring to a close what is set to be a massive year of sport for the city.

Wendy Barbour, Director of Commonwealth Games and Sponsorship for SSE, said: "As proud title sponsor of The SSE Hydro, we are really pleased  that the 2014 Sports Personality of the Year is coming to Glasgow.

“This is another great boost for the venue following on from the success of hosting the 18th MOBO Awards last year and also securing the MTV Europe Music Awards to be held later this year.”

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and the Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, added: “We’re delighted that Glasgow has been chosen to host the 2014 BBC Sport Personality of the Year in December, rounding off the most spectacular year in our city’s sporting history.

“As one of the top five venues in the world, The SSE Hydro is a fitting location to host the star-studded ceremony and strengthens our city’s reputation for delivering world-class events on a major scale.

“As we get ready to host the best ever Commonwealth Games, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year will give us the opportunity to remember and celebrate again the achievements, in Glasgow, of the world’s top athletes.”

Last year’s event saw Andy Murray take home the coveted Sports Personality of the Year trophy, presented to him by Martina Navratilova.
