The SSE Sport Relief Cup, which toured the UK and Ireland as part of a fundraising initiative, has found a new home at Roddensvale School in Larne, Co. Antrim.
Earlier this year, SSE employees took part in the Sport Relief Cup Relay event, which saw the trophy visit SSE sites across the UK and Ireland. Every staff member that touched the trophy donated £1 to Sport Relief.
After a long spell on the road, the cup has finally settled into a permanent home. It has been proudly revived as Roddensvale School’s new Sports Day trophy.
Roddensvale School provides education to children with severe learning disabilities. As part of the school’s curriculum, it offers students a wide range of physical activities, including football, golf and athletics.
This year’s school Sports Day event took place on Tuesday 13th May in Larne Leisure Centre. As part of the school’s 50th birthday celebrations, the event was given an ‘alternative’ twist, with pupils taking part in less traditional games such as ‘welly throwing’ and ‘dress the teacher’!
The idea to donate the trophy to Roddensvale came from SSE Airtricity Gas employee Lee Snoddy, whose son Jacob attends the school.
Lee said: “The Sport Relief Cup Relay was a great idea, and now that it’s over, it’s great that the trophy can be put to further good use. After all that touring, I think it deserves a good home! It looks great and the kids at Roddensvale really appreciate it. They all wanted to hold it on Sports Day.”
SSE was involved in a number of other fundraising events for Sport Relief 2014, including a ‘Wear Your National Colours to Work Day’, a 26 mile cycle and a meet and greet with Olympic boxer Michael Conlon.
In total, SSE donated a massive £350,000, helping to transform the lives of some of the world’s poorest people.
