A team of SSE employees proved their mettle by taking part in a monster challenge to raise funds for cancer charity Maggie’s.

Ten employees from SSE’s HR department in Perth and Inverness competed in the Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike last weekend which included cycling 31 miles and hiking 23 or 41 miles to reach the silver or gold finishes respectively.

The annual outdoor adventure pitted the team against the wilds of Scottish Highlands from Fort William to Inverness, and took them between 18 and 23 hours to complete.

SSE’s Robert Macdonald, who celebrated his 60th birthday this year, achieved gold, ten years after he last completed it.

He said: “We decided to take part in this event because we were looking for a challenge as well as an opportunity to raise money for a great cause. It’s also a big birthday for me this year and I was keen beat my time from 10 years ago.

“Although the course is immensely demanding, we all had a fantastic time. The camaraderie was superb and our support team was essential in helping us get through it. I also managed to complete it three and a half hours earlier than in 2004 so I’m pleased about that too.”

SSE’s HR team has already raised £3,600 for Maggie’s by taking part in the event and with further fundraising activities and support from family, friends and colleagues they are on course to raise much more.

The Maggie’s Bike and Hike is an annual event which attracts hundreds of participants to help raise cash for the Maggie’s cancer charity which runs cancer caring centres across the country. The challenge took place on May 3-4th this year.
