SSE Airtricity 10 mile challenge proves a runaway success for Irish athletes

More than 300 runners from across the Republic and Northern Ireland took part in the SSE Airtricity 10mile challenge in Co. Derry~Londonderry on Sunday 27th April. The race was the second of two warm-up events for the SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon which takes place on Sunday June 1st.
Foyle Valleys’ Chris McGuiness, saw off a strong challenge from Rosses AC man Ciaran McGonagle to claim victory in a terrific time of 55.56 mins. McGonagle finished just 41 seconds later at 56.37 mins, and Puis McIntyre, Foyle Valley completed the podium at 56.40 mins. Claire McGuigan, Lifford AC was the fastest of the ladies, breaking the tape in 65.14 mins and finishing 20th overall.
The race started and finished in the historic Ebrington Square, bringing the runners through St. Columb’s Park, over the Peace Bridge and alongside the Riverside Walk, taking in stunning views of the city’s waterfront roads and paths along the way.
Ladies winner Claire McGuigan said, “I’m delighted to win the SSE Airtricity 10 miler, the race was well organised and the crowds were great for support along the course and I’m now looking forward to the marathon in a little over a months’ time.”
Race director Noel McMonagle added, “The SSE Airtricity marathon team are delighted with the response from the runners coming out for the 10mile. Following the success of both the 10k and the 10 mile races, we can now look forward to the main event on 1st June. “
In anticipation of the marathon, SSE Airtricity’s Jillian Saunders said: “Today was a terrific effort from everyone involved, from the stewards to the runners and of course Noel and his team. The popularity of both the 10km and 10 mile races is a testament to the success of last year’s marathon, and the running culture that has developed around the city since then.”
