Scaling the heights to look after our feathered friends

01 Apr 2014

SSE prides itself on going the extra mile for its customers and that also extends to looking after our feathered friends.

When our engineers were faced with the challenge with the possibility of removing a tower that was also home to a pair of Ospreys it was time for a smart solution.

Rather than make the birds homeless SHE Transmission engineers decided to build them a new nest, no matter how high off the ground.

The specially constructed nest has been built on top of a 25m tall pole near the existing tower, thus causing minimal disruption to the Ospreys.

The planned work is part of SHE Transmission's East Coast 400kV reinforcement project to upgrade the existing power line that runs from Blackhillock, near Keith, to Blairingone, on the border of Perth & Kinross and Clackmannanshire.

In 1960, there was just one pair of Osprey living in Scotland and thankfully that figure is now closer to 300 across the UK.

To understand  the extraordinary lengths our SHE Transmission engineers have gone to for the Ospreys see the video below.
