Helicopter to complete high wire act for next phase of Beauly Denny Project
30 Apr 2014
A low flying helicopter will be used to install overhead wires on the next phase of the the Beauly Denny Project, just south of Fort Augustus.
Following erection of the new towers, a helicopter will be used to install overhead wires commencing from May 13 at a height of 50m – subject to favourable weather conditions.
The first stage of the wiring operation involves flying seven lightweight bonds along the 4km section of towers. The ropes are attached to a heavy-duty winch in preparation for the next stage, to pull heavy wires over the route.
Then the twelve aluminium electrical overhead wires and a single earthwire are pulled into their final positions. On completion of the winch operations trained linesmen will secure the wires to the glass insulators that hang from the arms of the towers.
John Buchan, Overhead Line Project Manager for the project, said the public would be kept fully informed of the work and any disruption would be kept to a minimum.
