Employees at SSE have kicked off their fundraising efforts in style to raise cash for charity partner Sport Relief.

During February and March, employees across the UK are hosting a range of fundraising events and taking part in strenuous sporting activities to raise cash that will change lives.

Staff have already taken part in a ‘Wear Your National Colours to Work Day’ as well as a ‘Sport Relief Cup Relay’ event which sees a trophy touring SSE sites to pass through as many hands as possible – with each ‘hand’ donating £1 towards the cause.

SSE Community Action Manager and event organiser Naila Akram, said: "The enthusiasm and reaction already shown by thousands of employees towards this charity has been fantastic. Money raised will benefit people both in the UK and overseas.

"We’ve been doing everything from dressing up, to bake sales, and raffles as well as setting ourselves sporting challenges such as marathons and football tournaments. Our Sport Relief Cup Relay is also winging its way around all our sites including Portsmouth, Perth, Cardiff and Belfast in a bid to generate cash to help this worthwhile cause."

SSE is no stranger to helping charities and local organisations in the communities where its 20,000 employees live and work. Employees regularly undertake fundraising events to raise cash for charities and since the launch of the company’s employee volunteering programme, Community at Heart in 2009, it has helped no less than 2,100 local projects across the UK.

Sport Relief encourages people to get active and raise money to help some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the UK and around the world. The charity’s help at home includes giving shelter to people living on the streets and protection to those living with domestic abuse. Support directed further afield includes helping children get into education, and providing communities with fresh water and life-saving vaccines.

The 2014 Sport Relief Weekend takes place from 21 – 23 March.
