An SSE employee is set to take on her biggest ever challenge by rowing for 24 hours to help raise cash for Sport Relief.

35-year-old Kirsty Reeman (pictured on right), who is based at SSE in Thatcham, will be joined by rowing club partner Sam Earle, 30, for the marathon event which will start at midday on Saturday 22nd March and finish 24 hours later at midday on Sunday 23rd March.

The duo are set to row a distance of around 280km (173 miles), equivalent to the distance between Chester and Reading, on a rowing machine at their local rowing club, alternating in 30 minute shifts.

Kirsty, who took up rowing just two years ago, said the hours between 2am and 6am would be the toughest.

She said: “A lot of people have said that we are mad to be doing this. I have never done anything like this before but both Sam and I feel that if you are going to do something for charity, you might as well go for it and really challenge yourself.

“In order to raise as much money as I can for Sport Relief, I’m prepared to have a crack at doing one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. My challenge will only last 24 hours but the help Sport Relief provides will change a life for someone.”

Kirsty and Sam have been training daily and eating the right food to last the pace. They also have plenty of novel ideas to keep them entertained and their spirits high.

Kirsty adds: “We’re anticipating we’ll have a tough few hours between 2am and 6am when we know most people will be in bed so we’re compiling playlists and selecting movies to keep us awake and stop us from getting bored. We’ve also asked some friends and family to pop down and cheer us on and give us a boost. We know it’s going to be a tough challenge but we’re keen to have lots of fun doing it too.”

SSE is an official partner for Sport Relief this year with its employees across the country undertaking sporting challenges to help raise cash. SSE is also match-funding every pound raised, which will go towards helping vulnerable people in the UK and abroad.
