SSE Airtricity staff take on Olympic boxer Michael Conlan to help raise millions for Sport Relief
21 Mar 2014Brave SSE Airtricity staff today took on Olympic boxer Michael Conlan to help raise millions of pounds and change lives for Sport Relief.
The boxer stepped out of the ring and onto the office floor to encourage more than 100 SSE Airtricity staff in Northern Ireland to dig deep and raise cash for communities in the UK and around the world.
SSE Home Nation Ambassador Michael visited SSE Airtricity’s Belfast offices, where staff paid for the chance square up to the boxer and become an Olympic medalist for a day, getting their picture taken wearing his prized bronze medal.
They also had the chance to win a pair of signed boxing gloves from the champ.
Josh Bradley of SSE Airtricity Belfast, said: “We’re raising thousands of pounds for a fantastic cause and it’s great to have Michael here taking part in it.
“It’s not often you get the chance to be a champ for a day and wear an Olympic medal. We’re just delighted we’ve not had to get in the ring with him.”
SSE is a proud partner of Sport Relief with its 20,000 staff, of which more than 100 are based in Belfast and millions of customers supporting the charity this year.
SSE staff across the UK are taking part in a wide range of fund-raising activities from 24 hour rowing competitions to A Question of Sport quizzes with Olympic and Commonwealth Games medalists. Ten staff from SSE Belfast are also embarking on a 26 mile marathon bike ride this weekend along the Lagan tow path in aid of Sport Relief.
All money raised by Sport Relief goes to help extremely vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and across the world, giving them a helping hand to turn their lives around.
SSE is no stranger to helping charities and local organisations in the communities where its 20,000 employees live and work. Employees regularly host fundraising events to raise cash for charities. Since the launch of the company’s employee volunteering programme, Community at Heart in 2009, it has helped no less than 40 local projects in Northern Ireland
As one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives, raising over £195million since 2002.
