More than 350 runners took part in the SSE Airtricity 10k challenge in Co. Derry-Londonderry on Sunday 9th March.
The race was the first of two warm-up events for the SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon, taking place on Sunday June 1st.
City of Derry Spartans’ Conor Bradley saw off a strong challenge from Foyle Valley AC man Scott Rankin to claim victory in the impressive time of 31.56. Rankin finished just three seconds later at 31.59, and Declan Reed completed the podium at 32.11.
Irish international runner Anne-Marie McGlynn was the fastest of the ladies, breaking the tape in 35.16 and finishing 6th overall.
The race started and finished in the historic Ebrington Square, bringing the runners through St. Columb’s Park, over the Peace Bridge and alongside the Riverside Walk, taking in stunning views of the city’s waterfront along the way.
Ladies winner Ann-Marie McGlynn said, “I’m delighted to win the SSE Airtricity 10k. The race was well organised and the crowds were great for support along the course. I’m now looking forward to the 10 mile race in April.”
In anticipation of the marathon, SSE Airtricity’s Donal Gormley, said: “We’re delighted to once again be involved with the Walled City Marathon. Last year was a real spectacle.
“Everyone from the runners and stewards to the entertainers and volunteers created a carnival atmosphere, and I’m looking forward to taking on the course this year myself. The race truly encapsulates the positive energy that SSE Airtricity is bringing to Northern Ireland.”
The second of the two warm-up events is the SSE Airtricity 10 mile challenge, set to take place on April 27th. Nearly 2,000 runners have already registered for the main event on June 1st.
