An energy and heating system which was designed, built and operated by SSE Utility Solutions has won a top UK award.

The district heating scheme at the Cube Housing Association cuts fuel bills for residents in the Wyndford estate in Glasgow and reduces greenhouse gases.

The system is capable of cutting heating bills by a quarter, and has been hailed as, “an outstanding project.”

SSE Utility Solutions and Cube picked up the prestigious prize at the Combined Heat and Power Association (CHPA) Awards for their work at Wyndford.

SSE Director of Development Scotland, Calum Wilson, said: “We are extremely proud the scheme has been recognised with this prestigious award. We look forward to continuing the success of the project for residents, Cube and SSE for many years to come.”

Cube Housing Association Chair Liz Ruine said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Cube’s investment in our heating and hot water system has been recognised as an industry leader.

“The estate has been transformed with tenants and homeowners not only cutting their fuel bills but also doing their bit for the environment.”

President of the CHPA, Lord Risby, praised SSE for the development at Wyndford. He said: “The judges felt this to be an outstanding project, which has made a real difference to the lives of the community in which it is situated.”

The system provides low-cost heating and hot water to more than 1,500 tenants and around 300 owners. It is one part of a £27million regeneration of the estate.

The heating engine and new insulation on the homes saves around 7,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year – the equivalent to flying more than 3.5million miles in an aeroplane.

The locally produced heat and insulation from the overcladding reduces the cost of heating homes by an average of 25 per cent.
