SSE is on the search for budding engineers to join its Trainee Engineer Programme within the Power Distribution, Transmission and Generation businesses.
The three-year programme consists of both academic study and work-based experience which will equip candidates with the qualifications and training to be fully fledged engineers, working for one of the country’s biggest energy companies.
Places are available across Scotland and England, including Aberdeen, Dingwall, Kirkwall, Poole, Melksham, Oxford and Reading.
As part of the course, successful candidates will study for a Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering. This includes studying core subjects of Engineering, Science and Mathematics and attending Aston University in Birmingham. Candidates will also receive a salary and lots of on the job training at SSE’s depots, power stations and control rooms, working alongside experienced craftsmen and engineers.
Zander Ross from Inverness and former Trainee Technical Skills Engineer, explains that the course is a great combination of work and study. He said: “I applied for the programme after I finished my HND at college in 2008 and I was over the moon when I had found out I was successful.
“I particularly liked the variation of the programme. We would go to university for a three week block then return to our base location to gain great hands-on experience. We were always travelling and visiting new places. One of the best parts of the programme was the friendships I made with the other trainee engineers all of whom I still keep in touch with.”
Zander graduated in 2012 and now plays an important role as a Control and Instrumentation Engineer within the Onshore Wind Generation Team, based at Fairburn wind farm in Inverness-shire.
Lee Head, SSE Pipelines Manager added: “This opportunity is perfect for someone looking for the first step on the engineering ladder. Candidates need to be on course for achieving or have already achieved the required qualifications. Candidates also need to be highly organised, self driven and able to manage their time well. Successful applicants should bring these skills and knowledge, and we’ll provide all the training needed to get candidates on their way to a successful career in engineering.”
Candidates should have, or be on target to achieve, Maths and Physics at A2 Level (A-C) or SQA Higher (A-B), as well as English at GCSE (A -C) or SCE Standard Grade (1-3). Alternatively, applicants may already be experienced within a technical role, and hold a minimum of HNC or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
Some of the locations available include Aberdeen, Aldershot, Dingwall, Dundee, Elgin, FortWilliam, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Melksham, New Forest (Minstead),Oxford, Peterhead, Poole, Reading and West London(Hayes).
Closing date for applications is 28 February 2014. To apply and find out more visit: http://www.ssejobs.co.uk under Trainee Engineers (TST) Programme.
