Nocturnal Southern Electric volunteers took time out of their busy working lives to help support the Rowans Hospice’s annual fundraising ‘Moonlit Meander’ in Hampshire.
A mix of thirty-five employees from Southern Electric’s Customer Service, IT and metering departments came out in force to help out with registration and distributed T-shirts, goodie bags and food. They also acted as marshals for the walkers, aged between 0 and 16, along the 12 mile route.
Ian Boucher, one of the volunteers, said walkers created home-made ‘stars’ especially for the walk.
He said: “The Meander is a 1.5-mile circular route around the Historic Dockyard, into secret areas of the Naval Base not normally open to the public and past HMS Victory which looks spectacular lit-up at night.
“It was a special night, there wasn’t one grumble from any of the participants about the distance and they were very brave leaving the stars and lighting their candles.”
The Rowans Hospice is a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Since 1994, they have helped more than 7,000 patients and families across Portsmouthand South East Hampshire.
Hospices receive no government funding and rely solely on fundraising and donations to provide their vital services, and the Rowan Hospice needs £4.8 million this year to continue its work.
SSE staff members have already completed over 4,600 Community at Heart days across more than 450 projects since April this year and continue to assist and reach out to local communities across the UK and Ireland.
