SSE has fired the starting gun on its search for 100 new apprentices for 2014.
There are opportunities in Generation, Power Distribution and Contracting at 50 locations across the UK, including Inverness, Perth, Glasgow, Reading, Portsmouth and Cardiff.
SSE offers potential candidates the chance to achieve qualifications and earn a salary at the same time as gaining practical, hands-on work experience. Every year since 2007 over 100 new apprentices have joined the programme.
John Stewart, Director of Human Resources, said SSE was proud to play a role in unearthing the next generation of British talent.
He said: “This is an exciting time of year for us when we begin the search for our new apprentices. At SSE we believe in offering young people skills and training and the potential to develop a fulfilling career in one of the UK’s biggest and diverse firms.
“There has already been strong interest in the scheme for this year which is not surprising given the range of different roles available. We’re proud of the contribution we make to UK plc and of the fact we employ 20,000 people across the country.”
Apprentices could find themselves operating the company’s wind farms or power stations; helping to maintain the 130,000 km of overhead and underground power lines across the distribution network or installing and maintaining customers' central heating systems.
Danielle Watson, 24, from Inverness, joined the Electrical Contracting Modern Apprenticeship scheme in 2012. She said: “In my experience an apprenticeship at SSE is a great first step onto the career ladder.
“I’ve learnt and done so much already. To be able to earn a salary and pick up industry recognised qualifications is a great combination. I would recommend the scheme to other young people out there looking to kick start their careers.”
The closing date for applications is 7 March 2014, with apprenticeships commencing in August 2014. Most apprenticeships last three to four years and apprentices attend college on a block release arrangement to speed up their progression.
