SSE's top tips to cut bills

It's Big Energy Saving Week and SSE is busy supporting the event with ideas for customers to help them cut bills.

Energy advisors will also be out and about at events across the UK.

SSE'S FOUR TOP TIPS TO CUT BILLS:

1) Know your usage

Before you start saving, it’s a good start to know how much energy you're currently using. Keeping a record of your usage will let you track how you're doing and let you know exactly how much you’re using.

Read your meter regularly and ensure you give the readings to your energy supplier.

2) Check your payment method

Make sure you are paying your energy bill by the cheapest method. At SSE by paying by monthly direct debit you can save £40 per fuel per year. And receiving paperless bills will add another £6 per fuel. When customers pay in this way it costs us less and we pass those savings onto customers. Savings can add up to £92 per year so it’s worth checking!

Not only will you earn a discount, but monthly direct debit will make managing your bills easier as you are spreading the cost throughout the year, and will help avoid unexpected bills. We have other types of payment options too, so give us a call if you would like to discuss these.

3) Wrap up your home

Up to 25% of the heat in your home is lost through the roof and up to 35% through the walls so insulating them can give you some great savings on your energy bills. In fact a good standard of loft and cavity wall insulation could save you up to £310* a year in total.

If you are on a low income, you might even be able to have this installed for free thanks to government-backed schemes such as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). SSE is on course to have installed around 100,000 free energy efficiency measures through ECO by the end of this financial year. You can contact your energy supplier to find out more.

4) Remember the small things too!

Saving energy doesn't have to take hours to organise or cost a lot. Even the simplest changes can make a big difference and the good news is you can do a lot of them for free. For example checking your heating and hot water is timed to only come on when you need it will also help. You can find more energy saving tips on our website.
