It’s already a hit with musicians and fans, but the SSE Hydro has now been credited with boosting trade for Glasgow restaurants in the area.

Dubbed the “Hydro Effect”, local restaurants and bars in Finnieston have seen increased takings since Scotland’s newest music venue opened its doors in September.

Businesses have reported their takings are up to 80%, with musicians themselves even popping in for a bite to eat before their gigs at The SSE Hydro.

The boost for Finnieston was even noted by Glasgow MSP Hanzala Malik in a motion submitted to the Scottish Parliament.

Mr Malik asked his colleagues to welcome the increase stating: “...The Parliament considers that existing restaurants, cafes, businesses and newly-opened businesses are doing extremely well, thanks to the Hydro; notes the comments of one businessman who stated that "when there is something on at the Hydro, our business increases by 70% to 80%, it has had a massive impact." understands that the boost to business has been called "the Hydro effect", and hopes that the surrounding areas continue to do well and benefit from the Hydro.”

The motion was backed by 13 other politicians from all parties, including Annabelle Ewing and Christina McKelvie.

The £125m venue is one of the world’s biggest and seats 12,000 people. Opened by Rod Stewart just two months ago, it will play host to around 140 acts each year and feature acts such as Fleetwood Mac, Robbie Williams, Black Sabbath, Calvin Harris and Dolly Parton.

SSE customers can get their hands on tickets for events and upgrades 48 hours in advance of public sale by registering for SSE Reward at www.ssereward.com

Wendy Barbour, SSE Director of Commonwealth Games and Sponsorship, said:

“The opening of The SSE Hydro was a historic moment for Glasgow and for Scotland and marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for SSE.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer SSE customers exclusive access to a range of benefits at The SSE Hydro through our investment. At the same time it’s great to hear the boost the venue is giving to business, restaurants and pubs in the surrounding area.”
