The 13-strong choir was set up in January this year. It recently visited Beachgrove House, Catmoor and Quayside Court residential homes, as part of the company’s employee volunteering scheme: Community at Heart.

Residents heard a mixture of popular Christmas carols and songs including: Silent Night, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer. Christmas poems and stories were also enjoyed and residents were encouraged to add their own dulcet tones to the merry sing-along.

Laura Balmforth, Choirmaster for SSE’s choir, said: “The SSE choir currently rehearse twice a week and are growing in confidence all the time. So we thought it would be a great idea to head out into the local community at Christmas and get people into the festive mood.

“The reception we received from residents was fantastic. They were quick to welcome us and joined in the songs. We were all a little nervous at the start but the atmosphere was brilliant and everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

SSE’s Community at Heart scheme enables SSE employees to take a day away from their normal work duties to help out with projects in their local community.

Now does anyone have a number for BBC choirmaster Gareth Malone?
