The SSE Hydro has scooped a prestigious hat-trick of designs awards, less than three months after first opening its doors to the public.
The new home for live entertainment in Scotland picked up awards for ‘Most Stylish Venue’ at the recently held Scottish Style Awards, and two further accolades for design, including the highly coveted Supreme Award by the Glasgow Institute of Architects.
The arena, designed by Foster + Partners, is the first to be handed the Supreme Award from the Glasgow Institute of Architects in three years.
At the Scottish Style Awards, the SSE Hydro was in good company, joining famous Scottish brands including The Blackbird (Edinburgh) for best bar, Central Market (Glasgow) for best restaurant and the CitizenM (Glasgow) for best hotel.
Wendy Barbour, Director of Commonwealth Games & Sponsorship, said the awards showed the SSE Hydro was now a Glasgow icon.
She said: “The SSE Hydro has already become an iconic landmark on the city skyline and we're delighted that our title sponsorship of such a stunning building allows us to offer our customers some brilliant benefits such as access to 48 hour pre-sale tickets and upgrades into our exclusive SSE customer lounges through www.ssereward.com.”
John Sharkey, Chief Executive at the SECC, which runs the venue, said:
“This is fantastic news, particularly when you consider we are a very new building. These awards are positive recognition of how the Hydro has been received by everyone.
“Glasgow has a great reputation for architecture and style, so it is great to see us in good company with many other iconic venues in the city.”
