SSE employees have donated thousands of bags of unwanted items to the British Heart Foundation’s Great British Bag-athon, the UK’s biggest stock donation appeal.

The company’s employees kicked off the collection of unwanted items such as CDs, books and bric-a-brac at its sites across Scotland, England and Wales in April 2011.

Since then, nearly 4,700 bags, worth up to £94,000* have been given to BHF shops. Every penny of these vital funds will allow the BHF to continue its life-saving research.

Diane Daley, Area Manager for BHF said: “We are absolutely delighted with the support we have received from SSE. Not only does SSE encourage staff to bring in stock for our shops but they have gone the extra mile by undertaking additional fundraising activities and assisted us with raising awareness of our Bag-athon events in shops.

“We could not fund our life-saving research without support like this and we want to thank every member of SSE staff who took part.”

In addition to the company’s continued BHF bag collections, employees at SSE’s Perth Customer Service Centre also took part in fundraising activities to raise extra funds for the charity throughout September, raising an impressive £900.

Dulce Trias, a member of SSE’s Healthy Working Lives team, added: “Our partnership with BHF has been invaluable for the staff here in two ways. It helps us to promote the important role of healthy eating and exercise in looking after our heart health and reducing the risk of cardio vascular disease. We also all really enjoy helping raise funds for this important charity and we’re keen to continue our support in the future.”
