Meet Glasgow 2014’s ‘Team SSE’

As anticipation to next year’s Commonwealth Games builds, official partner SSE unveils the athletes behind its ambassador programme - created to help encourage people to get behind their home nation, led by none other than Sir Chris Hoy.

Age: 37

Discipline: Track Cycling

Achievements:
Eleven-time world champion, six-time Olympic champion and a winner of a total of seven Olympic Games medals (six gold and one silver). Hoy is the most successful Olympic cyclist of all time.

With his three gold medals in 2008 Summer Olympics, Hoy became Scotland's most successful Olympian, the first Briton to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games since Henry Taylor in 1908, and the most successful Olympic cyclist. 

He won a further two gold medals (in the keirin and team sprint) at the 2012 Summer Olympics, making him the most successful British Olympian of all time in terms of gold medals, and the joint most decorated athlete with fellow cyclist Bradley Wiggins with seven medals in total. 

He received a knighthood in 2009 and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which will be used during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, was named in his honour.

Achievements:

Katarina has been billed as the ‘next Jessica Ennis’ after breaking her British Junior Record in the Heptathlon at the Junior World Champions last year. In June 2012, Katarina achieved the ‘A’ qualifying standard for the 2012 Olympics by scoring a personal best of 6,248 points at the TNT Fortuna Meeting. She competed in the London Olympics later on that summer finishing a respectable 15th place. Most recently, Katarina finished 5th in the Moscow 2013 World Championships with a new personal best of 6,449 points.

Discipline: 400m hurdles

Achievements: Child’s senior breakthrough came in the 2010 Commonwealth Games representing Scotland, where she won the silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles. She most recently won a silver medal in the 400m at the 2013 European Indoor Championships and was part GB’s 4 X 400m relay who won gold. The 26-year-old holds the Scottish indoor record for the 400m hurdles.

Boxing

Achievements:
Michael won his first Ulster novice title at the tender age of 11 years. Since then, he is a three times Irish national flyweight Champion. Michael qualified for the London Olympics after reaching the final 16 at the 2011 World Championships. He won a bronze medal for Ireland at the London Olympics after defeating French boxer Nordine Oubaali by 22-18 points in the quarter-final.

T46 100/200m

Achievements:
Sally made her senior debut at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she won bronze in the T46 200m. At the London Olympics she qualified for her first Paralympic final in the T46 100m, where she finished in 6th place. In the T46 200m, she equalled her season's best with a time of 27.78 and finished 4th in her heat, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
Libby Clegg

Discipline: T12 100/200m

Achievements:
Libby had a great 2012, winning a gold medal in the 100m and 200m at the IPC Athletics European Championships. She then won a silver medal in the London Olympics before being named ‘Para Athlete of the Year’ at the Scottish Athletics Awards. Since 2008 she has won 17 medals overall from World Cups, European Championships and Olympic Games.

Becky James

Cycling

Achievements:
Becky first made her mark on the sport during the European 2009 Track Championships where she won a gold medal in both the sprint and 500m time trial events. She finished 2009 strong with two gold medals, one silver medal and also set a new world record in the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships. Becky has already enjoyed success at the Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze medal in the 500m TT track race and a silver medal in the sprint track race for Wales at Delhi 2010. Most recently, Becky won her first world gold medal at the 2013 UCI Championships in the sprint.
Jade Jones

Age: 17

Discipline: Wheelchair Racer

Achievements: In 2011, Jade competed in the IPC Athletics World Championships in New Zealand and finished 5th in T54 200m race. In 2012, Jade recorded personal bests in the 400m, 800m and 1500m to qualify for all three events for the 2012 London Paralympics. Jones failed to qualify for the finals in both the 400m and 800m, finishing 6th and 5th respectively. In the 1500m she qualified through finishing 5th in the preliminary heat, but failed to medal. In September 2012 Jade competed in the Junior Wheelchair event of the Great North Run where she won the Tyne Tunnel 2k race. Most recently, Jade qualified for the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon where she raced in the T54 classification distance races, reaching the finals of the 400m, 800m, 1,500m and 5,000m.                                                                                             
Aled Davies

Nationality: Welsh

Age: 22

Discipline: Shot Put and Discus

Achievements: Aled began competing at a senior level in 2011, after becoming IWAS Junior champion in both F42 shot put and discus in the games at Olomouc in the Czech Republic. He made his senior World Championship debut in at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he won silver in the F42 Discus. On his Paralympic debut at London 2012, Aled became Paralympics GB's first medallist of the Games when he took bronze in the men's F42/F44 Shot Put. For his second event, the F42/F44 Discus, Aled secured the gold medal with his final throw of 46.14m and was awarded the medal by the Duchess of Cambridge. Most recently, Aled qualified for both shot and discus as part of the British team for the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships and secured a gold medal and a new world record  in the shot put.
