SSE has been exploring the potential of Hydrogen as a future car fuel as part of the H2Mobility project, tasked with developing the commercial roll-out of hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) from 2015.

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles provide the potential to decarbonise road transport, create new economic opportunities and reduce the environmental impact of vehicles.

SSE is working alongside a number of other partners as part of the project which includes the technology industry, fuel retailers, car manufacturers and the government.

In the first phase of the project the consortium’s research showed that FCEVs represent an attractive and sustainable long-term business proposition and that they can deliver valuable environmental and economic benefits to the UK. The project has also identified consumer appetite for the new technology as well as early adopter groups.

The findings have also provided a platform and motivation for the group to work towards an early market introduction for FCEVs.

SSE has been involved in the project from the start and has been actively exploring hydrogen production opportunities.

David Densley, SSE Head of Sustainable Transport said: “Hydrogen is an important renewable energy source with many applications in future energy systems. As an energy utility, SSE is very keen to explore all these potential applications and the work with our partners in UK H2Mobility is an important element of that process.”
