Southern Electric colleagues Paula Hughes and Wendy Weaver took part in this years 10k Twilight walk at Beaulieu in the New Forest to help raise funds for Marie Curie.
Marie Curie Nurses provide high quality nursing care, free of charge, to people with terminal illnesses in their own home, supported by their families. By taking part in Walk Ten 2013 Paula and Wendy will help to continue the work Marie Curie Nurses do in their area.
The walk took them around the idyllic Beaulieu Estate, starting at Beaulieu Motor Museum and gave them the opportunity to see its stunning surroundings at sunset.
Paula Hughes, a Meter Accuracy adviser based at Southern Electric’s Penner Road office explained why she took part: “When I was 11 years old my Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer and during the final few months of her life they came out regularly to help my Dad care for her. Not only did they help with the day to day care of my mum they also made sure that we were both okay too.
“The nurses were always so bright and cheery which must be hard when they have to walk in to people homes in such tragic circumstances.
“It is an illness that unfortunately touches so many people’s lives and without these wonderful nurses many people would be unable to spend their last days in their own homes surrounded by the memories of their lives.”
Paula’s colleague Wendy Weaver joined her on the walk and said: “I wanted to support Paula by doing the walk with her as I know that her experience of losing her mother is something that will always be with her.
“I along with many others have also been affected by cancer and even the smallest of contributions can make a difference to someone’s life. The walk itself was very uplifting with everyone in positive spirits. The weather was perfect and the New Forest at dusk was a beautiful backdrop for the walk”.
